Marchitó (Wilted)
Dir. Mason Arsenault
Wri. Mason Arsenault
Short Film, 2021

Role(s): Perdido and Encontrada
"A broken-hearted man reminisces about his lost love".

Marchitó (Wilted) was created in April 2021 as an audition submission piece during my time at university. To participate in the Devised II course, we were required to film and edit a video-based performance that was under five minutes. Not only did all the pieces seem to click together for it, but it was impressively created under somewhat rigorous conditions. With the exception of a basic outline, the script was written, the dialogue was translated, the props and costumes were bought, and the video was shot, edited, and colour-corrected in just ONE day entirely by myself. The deadline for this project fell right at the end of the semester, so most of my time had been focused on finishing my final assignments. That left the time I had to focus on this to just the final day before it needed to be submitted. Additionally, COVID was still a prevalent issue which made it challenging to have additional people to work on it with me. But even with restrictions and my often perfectionist nature towards my work, I feel pride in how it turned out. Having restrictions on the project taught me value in what to focus on and allowed me to break the short down to its most important elements. It also served as a testing ground for ideas I'm interested in exploring more in my work such as languages other than English. The one area I may have done differently is my Spanish as with the limited time, there is little guarantee its accuracy. Otherwise, this was a poignant and artistically adaptive step forward in developing my skills, particularly as a creator.

FUN FACT: The song featured in the flashback sequence is "Destino", written by Armando Domínguez and performed by Dora Luz. The song was a major influence in establishing the tone and the language of Marchitó (Wilted). "Destino" originated from an animated short film of the same name that was developed by Walt Disney and Salvador Dali in 1945, but wasn't completed and released until 2003.

Clown Brain
Dir. Day Chase
Wri. Day Chase
Short Film, 2022

Role: Goofy Banana

"Three different clowns (one angry, one happy, and one sad) perform for an invisible audience before breaking out into a brawl for clown supremacy".

Clown Brain was created in March 2022 under the imaginative vision of the wildly talented Day Chase and features the equally talented Jesse Thibert and Carter Debusschere as the other two clowns Business Casual Angry and Deep Sadness. Similar to Marchitó, much of the creative process and filming took place over the course of a single day. The structure and ideas came from Day, but they were very open-minded in hearing suggestions from the actors. I had experience with clown play from my university courses "Theatre for Young Audiences" and "Devised III", which helped in determining the logic and physicality of the character. The music by the talented Corey Ariss was created prior to filming. A technique not always done for filming, but did help us to establish tone and timing of the short. This was a delightful piece to be a part of with the wide array of talent that took part in it. Clown too can be such a fun form of performance to work with, offering so many layers of humour and deception, and can be an effective reminder to actors of the power of play.

FUN FACT: To add the chaos of the end fight, Day had people off the side throwing objects at us. Those people were Andrew Burniston, a performer I worked with in the Masque of the Red Death segment of A Night at the Grand Guignol and Alex Dodd whom I also worked with in Masque of the Red Death but was also the playwright behind It Comes in Threes.
